Winter Sky

Winter Sky, 6 x 4 1/2 inches, oil on panel.

Fall, my favorite season, seems to have gone on forever. I was able to swing flies for steelhead at least once a week, pursuing my new obsession with spey casting ( a two handed fly rod). Normally I look forward to the arrival of winter, but not this year.

But we are in western New York, so like it or not, winter shows up. Walking the dogs the end of last week, it was snowing, 17 degrees, the wind was howling, the sun barely breaking through. The dogs were a pain, digging for rotten potatoes, falling behind. About 1/2 mile from home, in the fields behind the house, I turned from calling the dogs on and was face to face with a coyote. 15 to 20 feet between us. He moved so quickly and so silently, he seemed to vaporize before me.

The sky reflecting many of the colors of his coat, the snow swirling, the girls all jazzed up and big over the encounter. Now I'm ready for winter.

A Wyoming Barn

A Wyoming Barn, 5 x 7 inches, oil on panel.

A barn from this summer's drive across Wyoming. I love the chalk blue of the western sky, and the green of the sage covered hills in the late mid-morning sun.

A huge barn I passed on my drive out west this last summer, shimmering in the hazy heat.

Hilltop Hayfield

Hilltop Hayfield, 4 x 6 inches, oil on panel.

About the time I got home from my western wanderings, the hay fields around home were turning a beautiful gold.

Recluse

Recluse, 5 x 6 inches, oil on panel.

Farming is still the most prevalent industry in western New York, and much of the area in and around the cities, towns and village reflect the agricultural history. In neighborhoods throughout the area, barns of various shapes and size are tucked in back yards or stand in vacant lots.

Slough Creek, Yellowstone National Park

Slough Creek, Yellowstone National Park, 5 x 6 inches, oil on panel.

I've spent several weeks in Yellowstone National Park over the last few summers. Lots of sketching, hiking, wildlife watching, and fishing. The landscape there is amazing, and the fishing can be too.

Red Roof, Bright Evening

Red Roof, Bright Evening, 5 x 7 inches, oil on panel.

The red roof caught my attention, but it was the big monolithic white shape, silhouetted against the dark tree-line, that made me want to paint it.
